Character Drawings

This is an anatomy of the character design I would do in full. I did this drawing as part of this to understand the a female anatomy in linked with the story of a female girl aged 16. So I can create a concept, I will need to get good at evaluating of how I can project this. Maybe I will do a concept of the top half of the body; possibly playing the guitar in still action.

This drawing was an anatomy drawing to help me get familar with the muscle structure of a female.
This piece artwork was mainly to improve my drawings and a collection ideas heading towards developing my final concept if I have any spare time nearing the end. This may come useful in the future so it adds on to my 5 year goals; to build a foundation of drawings.

Observational Drawings

Drawing of my own guitar based in my room to improve drawings skills and observations on what I see.

These 2 images are my observational drawings which I did to show my understanding of all angles to improve my drawings skills and proportions. This will help me think critically while I start modelling. I feel like my drawings has improved vastly and now I can focus much more on detail in the future in a more complex design.

Drawings

This was a drawing to look at the soundhole and pegs. A sketch to be proud of, I love how my drawings gets better with practice.

The shape of this guitars body look good as it has class and is a classic guitar model.

These are drawings which I did to help me draw at any angles and drawing components.

Artist Research

Dwiki Lazuardi

Bandung, Indonesia

This is an acoustic 3D model with the material made from spruce wood and the fret board made from mahogany wood. This artist used Auto CAD 2014 for 3D modelling and Key shot 5 for rendering. They used a technique to first edit the UV and texturize the entire model. The textures look really good and realistic and it has black line going around the edge of the guitar. The front body is a texture of a spruce wood; the side and back are the same texture with variant colours of brown. The light in the first image comes from an angle to show the texture of the front of the guitar. The colour is as a tone of the entire guitar. The headstock looks very simple and easy to model but It suits the rest of the guitar and he used a flat colour brown to apply instead of a texture.

The artist wants us to focus on the texture and the amount of detail he put in producing such as a fine artwork which looks ready to be placed in a game.  I like the textures he used and the bridge is unique as that catches my eye from the whole model. This is a guitar model which relates to me guitar in which I can relate to and pick out ideas from and is an inspiration to look at.

This is a character concept for an MMORPG produced by the artist Helen. This artist used only Photoshop to create this artwork using the Wacom tablet.

This artist used a lot of line drawing from curved line to horizontal lines to vertical lines.  The way she draws lines are thin lines that express delicacy in her work. Most of her work consists of light to greyscale colours. She uses the tone to create contracts of light and dark as well as creating dramatic scene. The lighting is coming from directly forward. She uses strokes of brushes to create under lay shadows and light. Her art style shows that they belong in a game and suit the genre what they’re created for. The colour used to create mood, tone and light.

The artist wants us to focus on the imagery of each character to see what their characteristics are because it is a concept for an MMORPG. 2 things I like about her artwork are use of colours and art style because it’s appealing and eye pleasing.
I’m planning to do an art concept which links in with my model and story which I want to create to convey the concept; that is only if I have some time left at the end.

These concepts are a 2D concept. There wearing gear equipment for combat/defence. Tod created these character concepts in Photoshop using a wide spec of brushes to blend and colour his work. The tone is to create the shadows which the light can’t hit in the concept. He used as much space to depict his work. The artist use tone to create light and dark contrast. The shapes used for these artwork are squares and rectangles to potray stenght and stability and circles to represent continuous movement
.
I like the use of colours and tone  as it makes the artwork look effective. In the artwork above the artist wants us to focus on the overall image of each character of what sort of perosn they are. This relates to my project as Im going to do a concept if I have spare time.

Texture Experimentation

This texture experiment was using a software called Photoshop.

This is my texture experiment from exploring different colour combination to make a realistic texture good enough to use on my model. I will now use a texture which I used from guitar. I have a new method to present my expirementation. Throughout this project I have gained the software skills in creating wood textures. I learnt a new tool from looking at a tutorial online; to break it down you need to first choose your pixel size, I personally used the pixel size from the tutorial was showing which was 800x800 pixels, RGB and 72 dpi.

Then you need to choose a light tones as well as dark because theyll be your foreground and background colours. On the display bar use Choose Filter then Render then Fibers. Here you can experiment with different variance and strenght setting to your liking.

Using the elliptical marqee tool, make an oval selection. By holding shift you can add more oval of where you want to create a realistic wood look

Next choose Select>Modify> Feather and choose 30 pixels or less. I picked to my own liking.

An Optional way to give a final polish is to go on to Filter>Sharpen> Unsharp.

Setting to the tutorial is

Amt:91
Radius: 2.2

Texture - "Power of 2"

Understanding of the term "Power of 2" for textures. I will need to undertand this as in my project I will be using Maya to texturize my model so it is important for myself to a better knowledge of what and why we used 2.

Firstly the power of 2 rule is a set of simple criteria ensuring image assets to comform sizes and dimensions which consists of height and weight.

The Power of 2 rule is fundamental as thats how game engines work and is equally applicable to concoles and PC.

This can effect the resolution of an image. it helps to make better textures allowing it to have the correct sizes; becyuase if the with and lenght is not the same then the texture can look out of balance and streched which wouldnt look too good.

It starts with 2 and keeps on mulitplying by the same value; they are basically textures that can fit into neat chunks of binary memory for better performance and optimised memory usage and also they should be square for best performance. So if this was in a game it would load well and can be read by the game engine.

Progression

I have made mind maps leading on to moodboards. These moodboards help to generate ideas and i can use refer back to. I have made initial sketches and thumbnails due to my moodboards I created earlier.

I feel like Im doing very well than expected, I am now thinking of conducting few experiments that may be considered to my original design.
Doing some artist research helps to expand the mind, looking into a few artists have allowed me to compare my work and intergrate these aspects of modelling.

Artist Research

On Going Artist Research,
I have looked at a few artist work on behance modelling simular intruments which inspires me and expands my desire.

This is a 3D guitar model, which has all the basic guitar components, and in fact it looks like it can be a game asset. The shape of this guitar is made from squares and rectangles; the form of this is a 3D design.

The artist has used Photoshop and 3D Maya software’s to produce this artwork. A range of tools from Photoshop to create the textures for the model and using Maya to model the actual mesh to apply these textures. For the colours used in Photoshop are light and dark brown mixed to create a sort of wood texture. From this model the UV must be simple for most parts except for the small bits such as the pegs from the headstocks. The tone of this model contrasts of light and dark and creates a tranquil atmosphere. The artist use the colour as a tone and pattern to create the mood of his artwork. The pattern is a natural pattern that occur in nature. As we can see the texture used is an optical texture meaning the artist used his skills to create the illusion of texture.

It is quite obvious the artist wants the audience to focus on the guitar and the small details that is quite well modelled so that we can appreciate his effort and the style in which implemented his artwork. One thing I liked about his work is the way he modelled the headstock and the bridge of the guitar, it personally looks quite unique. This relates to project as I am modelling a guitar as well and the fact I too will be using the same software’s as this artist.

Isabel Fierro

This artwork is an electric guitar model which is more complex than an acoustic guitar because its characteristics are different such as the body shape and texture etc. This is a perfect example for a game asset within video game.

The tools that this artist used were Autodesk Maya (All Versions), Pixologic Zbrush to create this astonishing model. The colours used on this are red, black and grey; red for main colour of the body, black for neck and bridge as well as the stand and grey for the string holder and pickups. The colours used are quite light and vibrant. Again the UV maybe quite complex but not too much as the shape is quite unique. There aren’t any patterns on this model and the mood is quite exquisite. The form of this model is a 3D design made from wood and metal just by the shininess of the object. The tone looks to create a vivid and fresh look and that is one of the things I like in this artwork as well as the unique shape because its shows character especially the headstock and guitar body.

This is a different model but I can see the uniqueness of this artwork and so I can easily relate my project to this.
